ChatGPT Free in 2026: What the Free Plan Does, Its Limits, and Go, Plus and Pro Prices
ChatGPT Free is the no-cost plan that, as of September 2026, gives unlimited everyday text chat with GPT-5.6 Luna, while file uploads, image generation, voice and deep research each carry separate limits. The paid ladder has three steps: Go at $8 a month (US price), Plus at $20, and Pro at $100 or $200; OpenAI's Korean pricing page lists them at ₩13,000, ₩29,000 and from ₩159,000. The newest models, GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna, are not available on Free or Go and start at Plus. ASAP built this guide only from OpenAI's official pricing page and Help Center.
What can you do with ChatGPT Free? (September 2026)
ChatGPT Free is a plan that, as of September 2026, runs on GPT-5.6 Luna and still includes web search, file uploads, data analysis and image generation. For harder questions you can turn on Think, which on the free plan also uses GPT-5.6 Luna according to the Help Center. Free users also get a Library with 500 MB of storage.
Here is what the pricing page lists for Free:
- Everyday text chat: unlimited, subject to abuse-prevention safeguards
- Web search, projects, study mode, and browsing and using existing GPTs
- Image generation: available, but limited and slower
- Voice chat, deep research, memory and Codex: all limited
What Free leaves out is equally clear. GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6 Sol, GPT-6 Luna and GPT-5.6 Sol are not in the Free model list, and scheduled tasks and video in voice chat are missing too. Creating new GPTs is blocked on every personal account, including Go, Plus and Pro, not just Free.
Where do ChatGPT Free limits kick in?
ChatGPT Free limits are applied per tool, not as a single message cap. OpenAI's Help Center keeps everyday text chat unlimited for free users and applies separate limits to file uploads, image generation, voice and data analysis. When you hit one, ChatGPT tells you and shows a reset time, and that tool pauses until then.
How much ChatGPT can read at once is a limit as well. On the pricing page, the Free GPT Instant context window is 27K tokens, with a maximum input of about 12 pages of text. Go and Plus get 54K (about 40 pages) and Pro gets 128K (about 250 pages). Anyone who pastes whole contracts or papers for a summary will hit this number first on Free.
If you upgrade to Plus or Pro after hitting a free limit, the Help Center says your limits reset right away. OpenAI does not publish exact per-tool counts and notes that the default model and limits change over time.

The biggest line in the table sits between Go and Plus. Go keeps the same model as Free and only raises tool limits, and the Help Center states that Go does not include GPT-5.6 Sol or legacy models. Plus is where the model generation changes.
What does ChatGPT Plus add?
ChatGPT Plus is the $20 plan (₩29,000 in Korea) where GPT-6 models, including GPT-6 Astra, first become available. While Free and Go stay on GPT-5.6 Luna, Plus opens GPT-6 Astra, GPT-6 Sol and GPT-6 Luna with limits and GPT-5.6 Sol with expanded limits. Plus also carries no ads.
Beyond models, the difference is in how you work. Plus adds scheduled tasks, higher Codex limits, and ChatGPT Work across desktop, web and mobile, plus larger deep research and memory limits. ChatGPT Pro price and the Pro $200 signup pause
ChatGPT Pro is the top personal plan and comes in two tiers, Pro $100 and Pro $200, starting from ₩159,000 a month on the Korean pricing page. According to the Help Center, both tiers share the same core features and differ only in limits: Pro $100 gives 5x the Plus limits and Pro $200 gives 20x.
Note that since September 10, 2026, new signups and upgrades to Pro $200 (Pro 20x) are paused. Existing subscribers keep renewing, and new buyers can choose only Pro $100. Pro also has the largest context: 128K for GPT Instant and 400K (about 680 pages) for reasoning models.
Who should pay for ChatGPT?
The deciding factor for paying for ChatGPT is long inputs and access to the newest models, not how much you chat. Free already includes unlimited everyday chat, so for asking questions and polishing short text, Free is enough as of September 2026. Here is the decision order ASAP draws from the official price sheet:
- Stay on Free: a few questions a day, short edits, an occasional image.
- Go ($8 US, ₩13,000 in Korea): uploads and image generation keep hitting limits, but you do not need GPT-6 models. Expect ads.
- Plus ($20, ₩29,000): you need GPT-6 Astra-class models for document analysis, coding or research, and want an ad-free experience.
- Pro ($100 and up, from ₩159,000): you exhaust Plus limits daily or handle hundreds of pages at once.
In Korea the gap between Go and Plus is ₩16,000, and what that money buys is a model generation. Go raises tool limits but still reasons with GPT-5.6 Luna, so if you are paying for better answers, skip Go and go to Plus. In Korea, Google AI Pro also costs ₩29,000 a month, which makes a side-by-side check against Plus worthwhile.
ChatGPT discounts and ads: what free users in Korea should know
ChatGPT's personal plans are billed monthly only, with no official annual discount as of September 2026. OpenAI's Help Center says Go, Plus and Pro do not support annual billing or prepaying several months, and the official discount on the pricing page, up to 75% off Business and Enterprise for nonprofits, is limited to organizations. Sharing an account with others is listed by the Help Center as a violation of the terms of use.
The price of Free is ads. OpenAI officially launched ChatGPT ads in South Korea, the UK, Mexico, Brazil and Japan on August 11, 2026, and ads appear only for Free and Go users, below answers and labeled as sponsored. Free users who do not want ads can pick an ad-free option with fewer daily messages and no access to some tools such as image generation. Ads do not appear in chats on sensitive topics such as health, mental health and politics, or in temporary chats.
